Werder Bremen reveal why Felix Agu has not reported for pre-season training
Published: July 06, 2025
Several Werder Bremen first-team players have returned from their summer break to undergo routine performance checks, with medical and fitness assessments scheduled to continue over the weekend.
According to the official website of Werder Bremen, four players – Felix Agu, Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid and Marco Grüll – will not be returning to Bremen this weekend.
The River Islanders explained that the aforementioned players missed the start of pre-season preparations due to international duty with their respective national teams following the end of last season.
Agu, who had a brilliant campaign with Werder Bremen in 2024-2025, switched allegiance to Nigeria, after making two appearances for Germany at U21 level.
After the Nigeria Football Federation received the greenlight from their German counterparts, the left-back made his full Super Eagles debut in the Unity Cup final against Jamaica, playing 83 minutes on the Gtech Community Stadium pitch.
Nigeria manager Eric Chelle considered including Agu in the travelling squad for last month's high-profile friendly against Russia in Moscow, but the plan was dropped due to the fullback's lack of a valid visa.
The 25-year-old has been instructed to report for pre-season training on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
Agu has attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A during the summer transfer window, though he remains under contract with Werder Bremen until June 30, 2027.
