Eyes on Senegal: The four players who could trouble Super Eagles in CHAN opener

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B face a formidable challenge as they kick off their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign against defending champions Senegal at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City today.

The Teranga Lions, known for their tactical discipline and depth, boast a squad of domestic talents capable of turning the tide in this Group D clash.

Here are four Senegalese players Nigeria must keep a close eye on to secure a positive result in this historic first CHAN encounter between the two West African giants.

Oumar Ba (Forward): A versatile and physically imposing striker, Oumar Ba is a nightmare for defenders with his exceptional positioning and clinical finishing.

His ability to exploit spaces and convert half-chances makes him a constant threat.

Nigeria’s defense, led by Junior Nduka, must neutralize Ba to limit Senegal’s attacking edge.

Baye Assane Ciss (Midfielder): The heartbeat of Senegal’s midfield, Ciss combines vision, precise passing, and tempo control to dictate play.

His ability to break lines with incisive passes can unlock Nigeria’s compact 4-4-2 diamond formation.

Ciss’s composure under pressure will test the Super Eagles’ midfield duo of Michael Tochukwu and Leonard Ngenge, who must disrupt his rhythm early.

Seyni Mbaye Ndiaye (Defender): A rock at the back, Ndiaye’s physicality and aerial dominance anchor Senegal’s defense.

His leadership will be crucial in organizing the backline against Nigeria’s pacy attackers.

The Super Eagles must exploit any lapses in his positioning to create scoring opportunities.

Moussa Cissé (Midfielder): Known for his work rate and versatility, Cissé can shift from defensive duties to supporting attacks seamlessly.

His energy could stretch Nigeria’s midfield, creating space for Ba and others. The Super Eagles must match his intensity to avoid being overrun.

With Senegal’s pedigree and Nigeria’s hunger for a maiden CHAN title, this match promises intensity.

The Super Eagles B, under coach Eric Chelle, must be tactically astute to counter these key threats and start their campaign on a high note.
