'One of my strengths' – Super Eagles hopeful Fernandez reacts after debut goal for Rangers
Published: August 17, 2025
Super Eagles hopeful Emmanuel Fernandez has expressed his joy after marking his debut with a goal for Rangers in a 4-2 win over Alloa Athletic, a result that sealed their place in the third round of the Scottish League Cup.
The 23-year-old central defender showcased his aerial prowess in the 23rd minute, rising highest to nod home Joe Rothwell’s free kick and restore Rangers’ advantage in the first half.
Reflecting on the performance, Fernandez said he was delighted to make an immediate impact on his debut and thanked the manager for trusting him with the opportunity.
“I am delighted to make my debut for the club,” he told Rangers TV. “And get my first goal. It was good.”
“I haven't played a lot lately and to get my first goal on my debut, I can't complain. Thanks to the gaffer for giving me the opportunity.”
Although primarily a defender, Emmanuel has built a reputation for being a constant threat from set pieces, underlining his value at both ends of the pitch.
Before sealing his move to Rangers in July 2025, Fernandez made 61 appearances across all competitions for Peterborough United, where he registered seven goals — five of them coming in his final season with the club.
Speaking on his threat from set pieces, Emmanuel believes it strengthens his game at both ends of the pitch.
“Attacking and defensive wise, I think it is one of my strengths. Sometimes when the opportunity comes I can't wait to get my head on it.”
Before making his official debut for Rangers, Fernandez had been an unused substitute in six competitive matches, including four UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
As the season progresses, he will be eager to seize more opportunities and establish himself as a regular in the team.
