Former Gunner Amaechi named in EFL TOTW after goal and assist for Plymouth
Published: August 18, 2025
Arsenal's Hale End Academy graduate Xavier Amaechi has been named in the WhoScored English Football League Team of the Week, which recognises the best performers across the Championship, League One and League Two.
The 24-year-old winger of Nigerian descent returned to English football in the summer transfer window, signing a three-year contract with Plymouth Argyle following his departure from German side FC Magdeburg.
Amaechi delivered an eye-catching performance despite Plymouth’s 3–2 defeat to Lincoln City at the weekend.
He first turned provider, setting up fellow summer recruit Owen Oseni in the 78th minute, before scoring himself two minutes later with a composed finish into the far corner after a mazy dribble into the box.
Beyond his goal contribution, Amaechi proved a constant threat to the Lincoln defence, completing eight dribbles, creating four key chances, taking four shots (two on target), and recording an 80.5 per cent pass accuracy.
His display earned him a WhoScored rating of 9.6 and the accolade of League One Player of the Week.
Since his arrival at Home Park, Amaechi has started all three of Plymouth’s league fixtures and also featured off the bench in the club's Carabao Cup victory over Queens Park Rangers.
A former England youth international, Amaechi has previously represented Hamburg, Karlsruher SC, Bolton Wanderers and Arsenal, where he came through the famed Hale End Academy.
