'It's a shame' – Ex-Burnley star urges Genk coach to hand Arokodare a start v Lech Poznan

Former Burnley midfielder Steven Defour has backed Racing Genk striker Tolu Arokodare to rediscover his form, stressing that the Nigerian forward needs confidence and an opportunity to start in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League playoff against Lech Poznan.

Arokodare, 24, has endured a frustrating start to the season, failing to score in his appearances so far.

However, Defour believes his attitude remains exemplary and that patience will pay off.

"It’s a shame for him that he couldn’t score, but I think he’s handling the situation well,” Defour told Het Belang van Limburg via Voetbal Primeur.

"He’s not giving up. That’s why it’s important that he gains confidence and starts against Poznan. If he can score there, he might be completely on his way."

The Super Eagles striker was a mainstay for Genk last season, starting 37 league matches and playing a central role in their campaign.

But this term, he has not been handed a starting role by head coach Thorsten Fink, amid mounting speculation about his future.

Fink has instead placed his trust in South Korean forward Hyeon-gyu Oh, leaving Arokodare to make only substitute appearances so far.

The reduced playing time has fueled transfer rumors, with clubs in Italy, Germany, and England reportedly showing interest in the Nigeria.

Arokodare remains under contract with Genk until 2027, having joined from French side Amiens SC in January 2023.

Thursday’s playoff clash with Lech Poznan could be the decisive moment for Arokodare.

A starting role and a potential goal on the continental stage would not only lift the striker’s confidence but also reaffirm his importance in Genk’s attacking setup.
