'Two contacts' – Rangers striker Dessers reveals Club Brugge wanted him
Published: August 19, 2025
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has disclosed that Belgian giants Club Brugge attempted to sign him on two separate occasions earlier in his career.
Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, as reported by the Glasgow Times, the 30-year-old revealed Brugge's interest first came during Ivan Leko's tenure as manager, and again while he was playing for Italian side Cremonese.
"There were indeed two contacts with Club (Brugge)," Dessers said.
"Once when (Ivan) Leko was manager there, and the last time when I was playing for Cremonese. But that interest never materialised."
The Nigeria international previously featured in Belgium with Lokeren, OH Leuven, and Genk, before spells across Europe that included Feyenoord, Cremonese, and his current club Rangers.
Despite turning down Brugge in the past, Dessers did not rule out the possibility of a return to Belgian football.
He hinted that he had recently bought a house in Mechelen, a sign that he remains connected to his homeland.
"Why not? It's still too early anyway, but I've been living abroad for quite a while and I recently bought a house in Mechelen," he added.
Dessers further revealed that KV Mechelen had expressed interest in his services.
"There are a few Belgian teams I'm particularly fond of. KV Mechelen is a fantastic club. And for the rest, I try to leave as many doors open as possible. You never know what a career will bring."
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has been at the center of transfer rumours since the start of the summer window, with strong links to Greek club AEK Athens.
However, the move has stalled, with reports suggesting the club failed to reach an agreement with Rangers over financial terms, making the deal difficult to finalise.
With just two weeks left before the transfer window closes, the Nigerian forward will be eager to resolve his future and shift his full attention back to football.
