Was Nwaneri's PL record broken? 15yo Dowman debuts for Arsenal in emphatic win v Leeds United

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta handed a debut to 15-year-old midfielder Max Dowman during his side's emphatic 5-0 victory over Premier League newcomers Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, sparking debate over whether Ethan Nwaneri’s record as the youngest player in English top-flight history had been eclipsed.

Dowman entered the fray in the 64th minute, replacing Noni Madueke with the contest already beyond doubt.

According to Arsenal's official website, the teenager has become only the third player to feature in a Premier League fixture before turning 16, following in the footsteps of his teammate Nwaneri and Leicester City's Jeremy Monga.

Nwaneri's record remains intact as the Anglo-Nigerian midfielder debuted at 15 years and 181 days—54 days younger than Dowman, who made his first appearance at 15 years and 235 days.

The England U17 international is therefore the second-youngest player in Premier League history.

Like Nwaneri, Dowman made his first appearance for the Gunners while still a schoolboy, though he is expected to sign scholarship terms with the club next season.

The Hale End Academy product impressed during his cameo, coming close to scoring twice before winning a stoppage-time penalty that Viktor Gyökeres calmly dispatched.

Earlier in the match, defender Jurrien Timber netted twice while Bukayo Saka also got on the scoresheet as Arsenal continued their strong start to the season.
