'An exciting player' – Former PL defender urges Chelsea to keep George after Delap's injury
Published: August 30, 2025
Former Premier League central defender Curtis Davies has urged Chelsea to retain Tyrique George despite interest from RB Leipzig, AS Roma, and other clubs.
Davies made the call while on commentary duty for BBC Radio 5 Live during Chelsea's 2-0 win over Fulham at Stamford Bridge.
George featured for the first time this season, coming on as a substitute for Liam Delap after the England international picked up a hamstring injury in the first half.
Reflecting on the youngster's future, the 40-year-old, who enjoyed spells with Leicester City, Aston Villa, and West Brom, argued that Chelsea's willingness to sell George stems largely from financial pressures rather than footballing reasons.
"We've just seen Tyrique George have to come on up front and he's an exciting player but he might move on and this is the PSR issue," he stated.
Davies added that Chelsea should assess the severity of Delap's injury before deciding on the 19-year-old's future this summer.
"If they get a scan back and Liam Delap is out for a couple of months they couldn't possibly let George go."
George, who enjoyed a breakout season with the Blues last term, continues to attract transfer interest ahead of the summer window's closure.
The youngster has emerged as a target for AS Roma, with the Serie A side turning to him after struggling to finalize personal terms with Jadon Sancho despite already reaching a club-to-club agreement with Manchester United.
RB Leipzig are also reportedly keen on securing George on loan, though Chelsea are said to prefer a permanent transfer valued at around €30 million.
With just days remaining before the window shuts, the Blues face a crucial decision over the forward's future while also monitoring the extent of Liam Delap's injury setback.
