Galatasaray equal two club records as Osimhen delivers in Rizespor clash

Victor Osimhen continued his impressive scoring run as Galatasaray equaled two long-standing club records with a 3-1 victory over Rizespor on Saturday night.

The Super Eagles striker was on target to help the Turkish champions maintain their perfect start to the season, while also writing a fresh chapter in the club's history.

Galatasaray have now scored 13 goals and conceded just once in the Super Lig this term, matching their best-ever goal difference at this stage of a campaign (+12), previously set in the 1994-1995 and 1998-1999 seasons.

In addition, the Istanbul giants have opened a league season with four straight wins for the second consecutive year — a feat only achieved once before, in the 1960-1961 and 1961-1962 campaigns.

Osimhen, who joined the Yellow-Reds on a permanent deal in the summer, doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 65th minute, rising high to head home a precise cross from Abdülkerim Bardakcı after Davidson Sanchez had opened the scoring in the first half.

The strike took the Nigerian international’s tally to two goals in three league appearances this season, adding to his effort in last week’s 4-0 victory over Kayserispor.

Dal Varešanović pulled one back for the visitors with 17 minutes left on the clock, while Mauro Icardi scored the third goal for the host in the final minutes of the game.

Osimhenenjoyed a standout loan spell at Galatasaray last season, playing a key role in their domestic double triumph.

He netted 37 goals and registered eight assists across all competitions, powering the Yellow-Reds to both the League title and the Turkish Cup.

Osimhen will now look to maintain his impressive form as he prepares for international duty with Nigeria.

The 26-year-old has been named in the 23-man squad to face South Africa and Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers scheduled for September.
