Super Eagles camp update: Iwobi, Bassey, Ola Aina among 13 players in Uyo pre-Rwanda
Published: September 02, 2025
The Nigerian Super Eagles' preparations for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers received a significant boost on Tuesday as nine more players joined the national team in Akwa Ibom ahead of crucial matches against Rwanda and South Africa.
The latest arrivals included Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Moses Simon, Chidozie Awaziem, Adebayo Adeleye, and Benjamin Fredericks.
They join an initial group of four players—William Troost-Ekong, Amas Obasogie, Felix Agu, and Raphael Onyedika—who arrived in Uyo on Monday.
Head coach Eric Chelle is expected to receive additional members of the squad later on Tuesday as preparations continue for the vital encounters.
A total of 23 players have been invited for the upcoming qualifiers.
The Super Eagles will first host Rwanda at home before traveling to Bloemfontein to face group leaders South Africa.
Wins in both fixtures are considered pivotal for Nigeria to enhance their prospects of qualifying for the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria currently occupies fourth place in Group C, having accumulated seven points from six matches.
The Super Eagles trail South Africa, who lead the group with 13 points, followed closely by Rwanda and the Benin Republic with eight points each.
Nigeria sits ahead of Lesotho, with six points, and Zimbabwe, with four.
Securing victories against Rwanda and South Africa is therefore essential to revive Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 World Cup.
