Super Eagles camp update: Nwabali arrives in Uyo ahead of World Cup qualifiers
Published: September 02, 2025
The Super Eagles' preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have received a major boost with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali finally joining the team in Uyo.
His arrival brings the number of players in camp to 16 as the squad continues to gear up for decisive matches against Rwanda and South Africa.
Nwabali, who has been a reliable figure for Nigeria in recent international fixtures, adds much-needed experience and stability to the goalkeeping department.
He linked up with the squad after their first training session on Tuesday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The session focused on tactical drills and fitness work as head coach Eric Chelle began to fine-tune his plans.
Another training session is expected to take place on Wednesday as preparations intensify.
Those already available in camp include Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Moses Simon, Chidozie Awaziem, Adebayo Adeleye, and Benjamin Fredericks.
They are joined by William Troost-Ekong, Amas Obasogie, Felix Agu, Bruno Onyemaechi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Frank Onyeka.
Nigeria enters this international window under pressure, currently sitting fourth in Group C with seven points from six matches.
South Africa lead the group with 13 points, while Rwanda and Benin are slightly ahead of the Super Eagles with eight points each.
Lesotho and Zimbabwe follow with six and four points respectively.
The Super Eagles will host Rwanda in Uyo before traveling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa in what are seen as pivotal fixtures for their World Cup qualification hopes.
With the tournament set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026, Chelle’s men know that only maximum points will keep their chances alive.
