'A reason they are here' – Iwobi endorses Agu and Fredrick before WCQ against Rwanda

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has praised the qualities of Benjamin Fredrick and Felix Agu as Nigeria prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday.

The Fulham star said he was impressed with the defenders after a light training session following the team's return to camp on Monday.

Both players, who featured for Nigeria during the Unity Cup tournament, are in line to make their competitive debuts for the Super Eagles.

Fredrick, currently on loan at Belgian side Dender from Brentford, earned his call-up after a run of consistent performances.

Agu has also been included in the squad despite Werder Bremen's inconsistent start to the campaign.

The call-up carries added significance as the fullback would be cap-tied to Nigeria should he make an appearance in either of the upcoming fixtures in Uyo or Bloemfontein.

Speaking to Football Fans Tribe, Iwobi highlighted the importance of making Agu and Fredrick feel at home in the squad.

"We had a light training session, and I got to see their qualities, but the manager knows, but we all know there's a reason why they are here to represent Nigeria.

“My job is to make them feel welcome and at home, and give them the confidence to come and showcase their talent.”

The former Arsenal midfielder added that the Super Eagles are determined to reignite their qualification campaign.

"Everyone is excited to prove a point, not just to Nigerians but to ourselves, that we can achieve our goal of going to the World Cup.

"So we are hungry and know our goals and targets, and we are ready to fight for the country.”

Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with seven points. A win against Rwanda's Amavubi will lift the Super Eagles above the Wasps and boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
