Felix Agu eyes cap-tying appearance for Nigeria, cites Okocha, Enyeama and Mikel as inspirations

Felix Agu has shared his excitement at being part of the Super Eagles squad as Nigeria prepare for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo.
The 25-year-old Werder Bremen full-back, who made his debut during the Unity Cup earlier this year, said joining the national team represents a major milestone in his career.
If Agu features in either of the Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda or South Africa, it would be a cap-tying appearance for Nigeria, permanently ruling out any possibility of switching allegiance to his country of birth, Germany.
"It’s a big honor to come here to represent the Super Eagles, to represent my home country,” Agu told Football Fans Tribe.
"It’s just nothing usual, like it’s one of the biggest countries in Africa. Also, the players we have here have the potential to be one of the best teams in general, and I’m just happy to represent this country and be with these great players.”
Agu, born in Osnabrück, Germany, to a Nigerian father from Enugu and a German mother, admitted that it has been a long time since he last visited Nigeria.
"It’s been some time, like when I was a kid. Maybe five years old,” he recalled.
His arrival in Uyo marks his first visit to the Akwa Ibom capital.
Reflecting on what he offers the Super Eagles, Agu highlighted his adaptability and energy.
"I’m capable of playing both sides in the full-back position. I bring speed, I bring intensity, good defending. And once in a while, I try to also help in the offense and of course bring some good moments there."
When asked which Nigerian greats inspired him growing up, Agu named three legends. “Definitely Jay-Jay Okocha. I also always liked Vincent Enyeama in goal and Obi Mikel,” he said.
The defender also credited his teammates for helping him feel at home in the squad.
"Definitely the most was Skippo William. From the start, because also one player I’m very good friends with used to play in the academy with Troost [Ekong], and that way we already knew each other beforehand.
"So he helped me a lot to settle in. Now all the boys are very open-minded, very good connection."
As for pre-match rituals, Agu revealed that he prefers to focus solely on performance rather than superstitions.
"I had some before, but I tried to get rid of all of them just to focus on the game itself. Get a free mind. Don’t think about other stuff.
"Oh, if I don’t step with my right foot on the pitch, like I have a bad game. So I just try to get rid of all of this and just focus on the match.”
Nigeria’s clash against Rwanda comes at a critical stage in the qualifying campaign. The Super Eagles currently sit fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing Rwanda by a single point.
A win in Uyo would see Nigeria leapfrog the Wasps and strengthen their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
