Adeleye discusses what has impressed him about Eric Chelle, Afcon, Super Eagles' GKs union
Published: September 04, 2025
Super Eagles goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye has praised head coach Eric Chelle and expressed delight at reuniting with fellow shot-stoppers Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie as Nigeria intensifies preparations for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Adeleye, who was recalled to the national team and included in the 23-man squad for the fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa, said Chelle’s relationship with the players has been impressive.
"He (Eric Chelle) is a good coach, very friendly with the players. I feel good and I am happy to be back to the squad again,” the Volos FC goalkeeper told Football Fans Tribe.
On his relationship with Nwabali and Obasogie, Adeleye described the duo as ‘amazing guys’ stressing that the atmosphere within the goalkeeping union has been positive.
He said: "Amazing guys and I'm happy to work with them as well."
The Super Eagles will be seeking redemption in Uyo when they face Rwanda on Saturday, September 6.
The last time both sides met in the Akwa Ibom capital, Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat, but the stakes are far higher this time with a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the line.
Looking ahead to the clash with Rwanda in Uyo, Adeleye said securing maximum points is crucial.
"The most important thing is to win this game, it's a very important game for us to win and we just have to give our best and get a better result to help us qualify for the World Cup.
"I have good feelings with the players and we are ready to play."
Nigeria's World Cup qualifiers in September and October will also act as a build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with Adeleye insisting the team is fully committed.
"Yes, the same mindset the players have, use these games also to prepare for the Afcon, we are looking forward to the games," he added.
On a personal level, Adeleye discussed his personal goals this season, stating: "That's my secret I cannot say. Let's face these two games first, from these two games we know what's going to happen in the future.
While Adeleye is expected to start from the bench, he remains hopeful that the Super Eagles can revive their qualification hopes and deliver victory to their fans in Uyo.
