Bafana Bafana roster change: Kaizer Chiefs right-back handed late call-up for WCQ v Nigeria
Published: September 06, 2025
South Africa coach Hugo Broos has added Thabiso Monyane to the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of Tuesday night’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.
Monyane, a right-back for Kaizer Chiefs, replaces Nyiko Mobbie, who sustained a serious injury during Friday night’s 3-0 victory over Lesotho at the Free State Stadium.
Mobbie was forced off the pitch just five minutes into the match after a clash of heads left him with a triple fracture of the eye socket.
Bafana Bafana team doctor Tshepo Molobi confirmed that Mobbie underwent surgery on Saturday morning and will provide further updates on his recovery once available.
Bafana Bafana currently top Group C with 16 points, maintaining a five-point lead over second-placed Benin, who defeated Zimbabwe 1-0 on Friday.
Broos’ men will aim to consolidate their position at the top of the group as they prepare for the challenging clash against Nigeria.
The Super Eagleswill host Rwanda in a crucial Group C fixture later today. Nigeria sits fourth in the standings with seven points and must secure a victory to remain in contention for World Cup qualification.
South Africa’s win over Lesotho has increased the pressure on Nigeria to perform, making Tuesday’s encounter a high-stakes affair for both sides.
Monyane’s inclusion provides a timely boost for Bafana Bafana’s defense ahead of the Nigeria match.
