'Coach spoke about it' - Bafana Bafana GK says World Cup ticket would be sweeter with win v Nigeria
Published: September 07, 2025
There is renewed optimism among Super Eagles supporters over Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup after Saturday's hard-fought 1-0 victory against Rwanda in Uyo.
The win cut the Super Eagles’ deficit behind South Africa at the top of the table to six points, a gap that could be erased if Nigeria secures victory in Tuesday's clash in Bloemfontein and pending litigation over Bafana Bafana's use of an ineligible player is resolved in their favour.
Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a victory over Nigeria would make the achievement even more memorable.
Chaine, who is Orlando Pirates' first choice shot-stopper but serves as deputy to Ronwen Williams in the national team, reflected on the importance of the upcoming clash.
The 28-year-old is convinced that South Africa are on the brink of a return to the world stage.
Sharing his thoughts ahead of the blockbuster match against the Super Eagles, Chaine told Eyewitness News: "We just realise how big it is for ourselves as a nation to qualify for the World Cup.
"2010 was our World Cup, and to qualify for the Fifa World Cup again has taken too long. Even the coach spoke about it – the fact that it would be the first in 20-odd years makes it extra special.
“For us as football players, we’re just focused on the game that is coming up. It’s a 90-minute game that means a lot, but when you break it down, you simply have to win the game.”
South Africa have appeared at three FIFA World Cups, in 1998, 2002 and as hosts in 2010, while Nigeria's sixth and most recent outing came at Russia 2018.
