'Completely fabricated' – Dortmund chief clears air on Chukwuemeka surgery rumours
Published: September 14, 2025
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has firmly dismissed recent reports suggesting that midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is set to undergo knee surgery this winter.
The 21-year-old, who has yet to fully impress since his permanent move to the Bundesliga club, was reportedly suffering from a loose knee joint and could require an operation, according to Ruhr Nachrichten.
Speaking ahead of Dortmund’s match against 1. FC Heidenheim, Kehl described the claims as 'completely fabricated.'
He said he was ‘very surprised’ by the story, emphasizing that neither he nor the club had been informed about any planned surgery for the English-Nigerian midfielder.
In quotes relayed by Fussballdaten, Kehl criticized the spread of unfounded rumors, stating, "I don’t think it’s right at some point that such voices emerge and rumors arise about the health of our players that are completely unfounded."
Chukwuemeka played 25 minutes as a substitute during Dortmund’s 2-0 victory over Heidenheim, entering the match in the 65th minute.
Kehl confirmed that the player showed no visible discomfort on the pitch and reiterated that “no surgery is planned for the winter.”
The midfielder joins a list of new Dortmund signings who have faced challenges this season.
Jude Bellingham is still seeking form, Fabio Silva remains sidelined due to injury, and Aaron Anselmino missed the Heidenheim match after a strong debut against Union Berlin.
Despite these difficulties, Chukwuemeka’s performance suggested he is gradually adapting to the demands of Bundesliga football.
Kehl’s statements aim to put an end to speculation and reassure fans about Chukwuemeka’s health, highlighting the club’s commitment to transparency and player welfare.
