History-maker: After scoring against Liverpool, Osimhen breaks Nigerian record for UCL goals
Published: September 30, 2025
Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has etched his name in history after netting the decisive strike in Galatasaray's 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League at the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi on Tuesday night.
The 26-year-old converted from the penalty spot in the 16th minute, sending goalkeeper Alisson Becker the wrong way to seal three crucial points for the Turkish champions.
The goal not only delivered victory on the night but also made Osimhen the first Nigerian player to reach double figures in the tournament.
Before the clash, Osimhen's tally stood at nine goals, level with former Inter Milan striker Obafemi Martins.
Meanwhile, his latest strike takes him to 10, cementing his place at the top of Nigeria's Champions League scorers' chart.
The feat also makes the Nigerian international the first to score for three different clubs in the competition — Lille (2 goals), Napoli (7 goals), and Galatasaray (1 goal) — across just 18 Champions League appearances.
In addition, Osimhen has now scored against eight different opponents, including Chelsea, Valencia, Ajax, Eintracht Frankfurt, AC Milan, Sporting Braga, Barcelona and Liverpool.
Other Nigerians with notable tallies in the tournament include Victor Ikpeba (7), Nwankwo Kanu (5), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (5), Ademola Lookman (5), and Samuel Chukwueze (4).
