'Was greedy' - Thierry Henry insists MOTM Osimhen was selfish in Galatasaray win v Liverpool
Published: October 01, 2025
Arsenal great Thierry Henry has claimed Victor Osimhen was at times 'greedy' during Galatasaray's hard-fought 1-0 win over Premier League champions Liverpool on matchday two of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
Fourteen minutes into the contest at the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi in Istanbul, the Turkish champions were awarded a penalty after Szoboszlai fouled Barış Alper Yılmaz in the box.
Making his first start after recovering from an ankle injury he suffered while on international duty on September 6, Osimhen stepped up and calmly sent the ball down the centre of the goal to score what proved to be the game-winning goal.
At the end of the game, UEFA Technical Observer Group picked Osimhen as the Player of the Match, noting that he was key in the transitional moments, and supported in a very well-organised press in defensive moments for Galatasaray.
Henry pointed out that the Super Eagles star opted to go for goal himself on a few occasions rather than set up his teammates in promising positions.
Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, the French World Cup winner said: "You’re always going to have a bit of luck — the penalty that they called wasn’t a penalty.
"They did fight on every single ball, they played the counter to the max. They could have had a couple more if Osimhen, sometimes, was a bit less greedy.
"He could have released the ball for one of his teammates. But he took the penalty ever so well."
Following his strike against Liverpool, Osimhen has etched his name into the record books as the first Nigerian to reach double figures in the UEFA Champions League proper, surpassing Obafemi Martins' tally of nine goals.
