'A close call' - Desabre admits Leopards could have lost to Super Eagles in penalty shootout

Democratic Republic of Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has admitted his side narrowly escaped defeat against Nigeria after progressing 4-3 on penalties in the African qualifying playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match, played in Morocco on Sunday night, ended 1-1 after extra time before the shootout decided the winner.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Desabre expressed delight with his team's display and noted how closely contested the fixture was. “It was a close call,” he said, acknowledging that the Leopards faced a strong challenge from the Super Eagles.

He praised the quality of the environment in which the decisive fixture was played.

"We played a better match for a while now. The playing conditions were favourable since we played on a beautiful pitch," Desabre told reporters.

Still reflecting on the tight finish to the match, he admitted that the result could have easily gone the other way.

"We also have to congratulate Nigeria, it was a close call. We could have not qualified in the penalty shootout."

Despite the difficulty of the contest, the DR Congo coach highlighted that his team's effort warranted the victory they secured.

"But overall we deserved the victory and we have to congratulate the players and those who work around to organize the team."

He also recognised the stature and capability of the Nigerian side, "It was a bit difficult for us. Nigeria is ahead in the Fifa ranking and the coach is good".

Nigeria had taken the lead early in the match when Frank Onyeka scored in the third minute.

The Super Eagles looked to build on the strong start, but DR Congo responded through Meschack Elia, who struck to make it 1-1 and ensured the game extended into extra time.

DR Congo will now wait for their next opponents in March as they continue their quest to reach the expanded 48-team World Cup finals.
