Italy coach scouts Nigerian defender Ahanor but passport rules delay call-up for November's WCQs

Italy national team manager Gennaro Gattuso was spotted in the stands during Atalanta's 1-1 draw against AC Milan on Tuesday night, where he closely monitored promising defender Honest Ahanor.

Ahanor, who joined Atalanta during the summer transfer window, has quickly become one of the standout youngsters for the Bergamo-based club.

Known for his strength, composure in duels, and tactical versatility, the 17-year-old has caught the attention of Italy's technical crew.

According to Tutto Atalanta, Gattuso's visit was part of an ongoing assessment of emerging talents eligible for the Azzurri.

The Italian manager reportedly observed Ahanor alongside two other youngsters, Lorenzo Bernasconi and Davide Bartesaghi, as he prepared for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway in November.

Ahanor will miss out on a call-up to the Italy squad for the November internationals due to incomplete paperwork.

Under Italian nationality law, he will not be eligible for an Italian passport until he reaches the age of majority on February 23, 2026.

With Gattuso personally watching his performance, Italy appear to be edging closer to securing the young defender's international future ahead of the Super Eagles.

Ahanor has started five matches for Atalanta so far this season, while making two appearances off the bench.
