Women's Afconq Nigeria 1-1 Benin: Plumptre scores her first-ever goal for Super Falcons
Published: October 28, 2025
The Super Falcons have booked their place at the next Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after playing out a 1-1 draw against the Republic of Benin on Tuesday evening.
Ashleigh Plumptre opened her account for Nigeria with a fine first-half strike at the MKO Abiola Stadium, sealing a 3-1 aggregate triumph for the reigning African champions.
The Falcons began the encounter on the front foot, dominating possession and pinning Benin in their own half for much of the opening stages.
Their early pressure paid off in the 12th minute when Plumptre rose highest to head home a well-delivered corner from Esther Okoronkwo, giving Nigeria a deserved lead.
The Super Falcons maintained their dominance throughout the first half, controlling possession and ensuring they went into the break with a deserved lead.
Benin, however, came out stronger in the second half, pushing forward in search of an equaliser.
Their efforts were rewarded ten minutes from time when they found the back of the net, beating Brighton goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to level the score.
Despite the late pressure, the Falcons held their ground to secure a 1-1 draw in front of their home fans.
Having claimed a 2-0 victory in the first leg through goals from Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo, Nigeria sealed a 3-1 aggregate triumph to qualify for the upcoming WAFCON tournament and continue their quest to defend the title they won in Morocco.
