The Super Eagles have begun preparations for their international friendly against Russia with their first training session in Nizhny Novgorod on Saturday afternoon.
Nigeria arrived in Russia on Friday and have now turned their attention to Tuesday’s encounter with the Russian national team at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
Head coach Éric Chelle is using the October international window to continue working with his squad following Nigeria’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles defeated Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau.
Several players have already linked up with the squad in Russia, including Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Benjamin Fredrick, Akor Adams, Emmanuel Fernandez and Popoola Abdulrasaq.
There have also been changes to the squad ahead of the friendly. Captain Wilfred Ndidi withdrew from the assignment, while Akpe Victory was ruled out after suffering an injury in training. John Otomewo and Vince Osuji were subsequently called up as replacements.
Chelle and his players will now have the opportunity to work on their preparations in Nizhny Novgorod before facing Russia in what will be another test for the Super Eagles during the international window.
Nigeria and Russia previously met in a senior international friendly in Moscow in June 2025, with the encounter ending in a 1-1 draw.
The Super Eagles will be hoping for another positive performance when they face Russia on Tuesday, October 6, at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
