Trabzonspor's Nwaiwu opens account for the season in Black Sea derby, escapes suspension for now

Chibuike Nwaiwu scored his first goal of the season for Trabzonspor as they defeated Samsunspor 3-0 in the Turkish Super Lig at Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadyumu on Saturday afternoon.

Trabzonspor produced a dominant first half display in the Black Sea derby, scoring three goals to secure a comfortable victory over their regional rivals.

Ernest Muçi opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a finish from inside the penalty area.

Ten minutes later, Nwaiwu doubled Trabzonspor's advantage after Samsunspor goalkeeper Okan Kocuk failed to hold Muçi's effort, allowing the Super Eagles centre-back  to find the net.

Franculino Djú added the third goal in the 40th minute, completing Trabzonspor's impressive first half performance.

Beyond his goal, Nwaiwu also avoided a potential suspension ahead of Trabzonspor's next league fixture against Besiktas at Papara Park.

The Nigeria international had accumulated three yellow cards in consecutive matches against Basaksehir, Amed SK and Genclerbirligi.

A booking in today's derby would have left him suspended for the meeting with Besiktas on Monday, October 19.

Nwaiwu was named in Nigeria’s matchday squads for the back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau but remained an unused substitute in both games.
