'Transfer periods create serious problems' - Citlak explains Onuachu's slow start to season

Turkish football pundit Okan Çıtlak has suggested that transfer uncertainty may be contributing to Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu’s difficult start to the 2026/2027 campaign at Trabzonspor.

Onuachu, who joined the Turkish club permanently last summer, enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, scoring 22 goals and providing two assists in 30 appearances to finish as the league’s top scorer.

However, the Nigerian international has struggled to replicate that form this season, failing to find the net in Trabzonspor’s opening three matches across all competitions against Kasimpasa, Basaksehir and Ferencváros.

His slow start to the campaign has raised questions about his future at the club, with transfer speculation linking him with a possible move away from Trabzonspor.

The Nigerian striker has reportedly attracted interest from Saudi Arabian clubs ahead of the close of the current summer transfer window.

In an interview reported by Haber61, Çıtlak noted that players can experience confusion when they receive lucrative offers from other clubs during the transfer window.

"We experienced the same situation last season in August,” Çıtlak said. “Players going through transfer periods experience some confusion.”

“Especially when high transfer offers come in, confusion inevitably arises. I think a similar scenario could happen with Onuachu. They might be waiting for the transfer window to close so that Onuachu can have peace of mind. These transfer periods create serious problems for players."

Çıtlak said the club could be hoping for the transfer window to close so the striker can regain peace of mind and focus fully on football.

"If you are a sought-after player and the amount offered to you is more than what you are earning at your current club, of course, confusion arises. Onuachu received offers, but he is currently a Trabzonspor player. Perhaps this may have created some confusion. After all, these are professional players,” he concluded.

With just a few days remaining before the close of the summer transfer window, Onuachu will be eager to resolve his future and rediscover the form that made him one of the league’s top scorers last season.
