The Super Falcons of Nigeria will be seeking to secure their place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off when they face South Africa on Thursday, with four key Banyana Banyana players expected to demand particular attention.
Both teams were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, leaving their World Cup hopes to be decided in the play-off, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental play-off route for the 2027 tournament in Brazil.
Thembi Kgatlana
Kgatlana remains South Africa’s biggest attacking threat. The experienced forward was among Banyana Banyana’s standout performers at the 2026 WAFCON, scoring important goals during their campaign.
She scored in the 2-2 comeback draw against Ivory Coast before also finding the net against Morocco in the quarter-final.
Her pace, direct running and ability to create opportunities make her a player Nigeria’s defence cannot afford to give space.
Hildah Magaia
Magaia also enjoyed a productive tournament and showed her importance in South Africa’s attack.
She scored the dramatic late equaliser against Ivory Coast, completing a comeback after Banyana Banyana had fallen two goals behind.
Her movement inside the penalty area and finishing ability could pose another major problem for the Super Falcons.
Linda Motlhalo
Motlhalo provides creativity and control from midfield. She was one of South Africa’s experienced players at the tournament and reached her 100th international appearance during the Wafcon opener against Tanzania.
Her ability to link midfield with attack means Nigeria will need to limit her influence and prevent her from dictating the tempo.
Refiloe Jane
Captain Jane brings experience, leadership and composure to the heart of the Banyana Banyana midfield.
She was part of the experienced core selected for the tournament and has been an important figure in Desiree Ellis’ team.
With the World Cup at stake, Nigeria will need to keep South Africa’s experienced captain under pressure throughout the encounter.
