Cameroon head coach Valentine Nguélé has admitted that the Super Falcons of Nigeria are the favourites ahead of Sunday’s 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash between the two sides.
Nigeria secured their place in the last eight after thrashing Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C fixture, while Cameroon advanced as winners of Group D.
With the highly anticipated quarter-final approaching, Nguélé acknowledged Nigeria’s pedigree in the competition, pointing to their impressive record and difficult route to the knockout stage.
“Nigeria is a very strong footballing nation. They are the favorites in this competition with ten titles to their name. The Super Falcons qualified under better circumstances than we did. We're going to ask the players to enjoy themselves,” she said as quoted by Camfoot.
Despite recognising Nigeria’s advantage in terms of experience and success, Nguélé said Cameroon would approach the encounter with a positive mindset and urged her players to enjoy the opportunity.
“The girls are ready to play with a positive attitude. We must thank the Lord. We were given a second chance. We find ourselves in the quarterfinals. That's a bonus. What happens tomorrow (today) is in the Lord's hands.”
The Indomitable Lionesses will now look to produce a strong performance against the defending champions and secure a place in the semi-finals.
Nigeria, meanwhile, will be aiming to continue their title defence after recovering from their disappointing group-stage defeat to Malawi with a convincing victory over Egypt.
The quarter-final meeting therefore carries added significance, with a place in the semi-finals and automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil at stake.
The four teams that reach the Wafcon semi-finals will secure Africa’s four guaranteed places at the tournament, making Sunday’s clash an important encounter for both Nigeria and Cameroon.
