Son of Arsenal legend who faced Nigeria three times at Afcon inks new contract with Chelsea

Through a statement on the official website, Chelsea have announced their new intake of scholars for the 2025-2026 season.

Although the Blues confirmed the identities of the first year scholars today, allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported on June 28 that the promising teenagers officially signed their scholarship agreements on July 3.

Among the sixteen first year scholars is Mathis Eboue, who is eligible for England and Ivory Coast.

If the name sounds unfamiliar, Mathis is the son of Arsenal legend Emmanuel Eboué, who made 214 appearances for the North London club and played in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final during his distinguished career.

Former Ivory Coast international Emmanuel Eboué faced Nigeria's Super Eagles on three occasions at the Africa Cup of Nations, featuring in the 2006, 2008 and 2013 editions of the tournament.

The fullback played the full 90 minutes in each encounter, underlining his key role in the Elephants' backline during that era.

A forward by trade, Mathis has made three appearances for England U16s, scoring once.

The 2009-born player made his competitive debut for Chelsea U18s in his final season as a schoolboy, coming off the bench in a 5-1 win over Norwich City back in April.

Mathis has been described as a versatile and creative attacker who can operate across the front line and excels during attacking transitions.

The 16-year-old joined Chelsea from Watford in January 2025, having previously made his debut for the Hornets’ U21 side.
