Birmingham City manager delivers Osayi-Samuel update after club stopped him from Russia friendly

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has confirmed that Bright Osayi-Samuel is in good physical condition ahead of his side’s Championship clash against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Without going into detail, Davies revealed that the versatile fullback returned early from international duty with the Super Eagles.

Osayi-Samuel was named in Nigeria’s final squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, as well as the recent international friendly against Russia.

However, the right back withdrew from the travelling squad for the match in Moscow.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed two days before the friendly against Russia that Birmingham City had decided to prevent the defender from travelling to Moscow.

Osayi-Samuel was among the players who returned to the club earlier than Liam Millar, who rejoined the squad on Thursday.

Providing an update on the condition of players who had represented their respective national teams during the international break, Davies said: "Everyone is good. We've had August, James and Bright back a little bit earlier than Liam that came back today, but everyone's in good shape.

"Paik picked a bit of a knock, which he has been carrying for a little while, so he is the only one that looks like he'll be missing a few games, but everyone else seems to be in good shape."

Osayi-Samuel played the last three minutes of Nigeria's 2-1 win over Madagascar, before going the distance in the defeat to Guinea-Bissau.
