A sparkling first half display by new boys, Mountain of Fire (MFM) set the tone for a 2-1 victory over Rivers United in a highly-entertaining Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) contest decided at the Agege Stadium, Stadium on Wednesday.
United made two changes to the match day squad with technical manager,Stanley Eguma opting to drop Bernard Ovoke and Ebitimi with Victor Alegbe and Daniel Israel starting instead.
MFM came into the game in boisterous form following their 2-1 road victory over highly-fancied Nasarawa United on match day one.
The host took the lead in the 18th minute through an Ifeanyi Ifeanyi penalty after Olatunbosun Sikiru was fouled by the United captain, Festus Austin.
That lead was doubled six minutes later in exhilarating fashion by Olatunbosun following a lightening break that left the United defenders gasping for breath.
MFM were flying and could easily have added two more goals before the break with Joseph Douhadji making a goalline clearance off a Musa Newman chip in the 31st minute while Olatunbosun had a rocket beaten out unconventionally by Rotimi in the 37th minute.
United needed to improve after the restart and they did with Ivoirian, Guenan Guy Nonance brought in to add urgency to the attack.
The move paid off with the Ivoirian crossing with pin point accuracy from the right for an unmarked Obomate Frederick to head home from close range.
United came close to levelling matters in the minute but Chigozie Ihunda’s powerful drive was oushed onto the post by a diving MFM goalkeeper, James Ayeyemi.
Ayeyemi was called into action in the 70th minute and his stupendous double save denied Obomate and then Ali with United almost celebrating a second goal.
United continued to press for the equalizer but were eventually made to pay fortheir slow start as MFM held out for maximum points.
