Chelsea Hail Mikel For Offensive Qualities And Nigeria For Solidifying Their Defense
Published: August 18, 2016
In their review of the encounter between Nigeria and Germany, Premier League club Chelsea were pleased with the performance of Team Nigeria skipper Mikel, noting that he had several opportunities to restore parity during the game.
Mikel, who is mostly deployed as a defensive midfielder at the Blues, played in a more advanced position against the Germans and would have netted one of the goals of the competition but his final effort was blocked.
Chelsea wrote on their official webpage : “Nigeria earned great credit for solidifying their defence and preserving possession as Germany once again demonstrated their tournament expertise.
“Mikel came close to scoring an equaliser on several occasions, notably when he humbled two defenders with a beautiful dribble into the box but saw a deflection deny him and, in the second half, smashing the side netting from a free kick.
“The experience of Mikel continued to shine through as he skippered the side from an advanced position behind the Nigerian front line, featuring the AS Roma striker Sadiq Umar.”
Lukas Klostermann and Nils Peterson registered their names on the score sheet for the Germans as they secured a 2-0 win.
