Iwobi Nets Last Minute Equalizer & Converts Penalty As Arsenal Beat Bayern Munich
Published: July 19, 2017
Two players of Nigerian descent Alex Iwobi and David Alaba were on parade at the Shanghai Stadium on Wednesday afternoon as Arsenal beat Bayern Munich 3-2 on penalties in their third pre-season fixture.
While left wing-back Alaba started and put in a full shift for the German champions, Super Eagles star Iwobi came off the bench for the FA Cup winners before the second half started.
In the ninth minute, Robert Lewandowski was always going to score from the spot, the referee had awarded a penalty after Maitland-Niles fouled Bernat.
Four minutes before the break, James Rodriguez's half-volley nearly doubled Bayern's advantage, but he was denied by a world class save from Čech.
The Gunners netminder was the busier of the two goalkeepers and he produced another save to keep out David Alaba's free-kick on the hour mark.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Iwobi headed home Aaron Ramsey's inviting cross and sent the game to penalties
Austria international David Alaba's penalty, Bayern's first kick, was saved, while Iwobi was successful.
