Real Sociedad coach defends decision to omit Sadiq from squad against Celta Vigo

Real Sociedad manager Sergio Francisco has explained why Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar was left out of the squad in their 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo last weekend.

Sadiq, who was not listed for the matchday squad, made his return ahead of the club's upcoming clash against Sevilla.

Speaking during his pre-match conference before the visit of Sevilla, Francisco described the decision as purely technical, emphasizing squad selection based on the game plan.

"We had to choose the squad, we had to choose what we felt or what the plan was going to be," he revealed as quoted by Eldesmarque.

"Karrika came on and played her best 15 minutes, they're training very well."

The manager further disclosed that 23-year-old Jon Karrikaburu is currently ahead of the Nigerian in the pecking order.

"What I asked of both of them is that they be available and prepared. The match will determine the choices. Both are available. Karri has taken that step forward so we can count on him more," he added.

Sadiq has endured a slow start to the season after a failed move away from Real Sociedad in the summer.

The former Almería forward, who had a decent time on loan at Valencia last season, was reportedly close to rejoining the Mestalla side before the deal fell through.

So far, the Nigerian international has played just 14 minutes across two appearances in all competitions this season and will be eager to earn more opportunities to reestablish himself in Francisco's side.
