Werder Bremen manager hails Boniface's exceptional abilities, names him first choice Off the bench
Published: October 23, 2025
Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen has praised Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface for his exceptional abilities, explaining that the 24-year-old's impressive potential has earned him a place ahead of Keke Topp in the team's pecking order.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Werder Bremen's Bundesliga clash against Union Berlin, Steffen revealed that Boniface has become his preferred first substitute option in attack.
"Victor is a candidate whose potential we all know, and his exceptional abilities are so exceptional that I currently prefer him as the first substitute," the coach said, as quoted by Weserkurier.
Boniface, who joined Werder Bremon on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen on deadline day, has not yet been considered for a starting role due to his fitness level, but Steffen made it clear that the Nigeria international remains central to his attacking plans.
The coach's remarks suggest that Boniface's technical quality and physical strength have impressed the coaching staff, even as the striker continues to build match fitness.
With Werder Bremen occasionally using midfielder Romano Schmid as a false nine, Steffen has been seeking the right balance in attack.
Boniface's growing importance could see him play a more decisive role in the coming weeks, especially once he reaches full sharpness.
The coach added that he hopes both Boniface and Topp will soon hit top form, allowing for stronger competition for starting places.
"We have two skilled center forwards who are both on their way," Steffen noted.
