Jonathan Obika And Oxford United Fall To Chelsea In Checkatrade Trophy
Published: January 23, 2018
A rampant first half from Chelsea U21s at Stamford Bridge saw the young Blues beat Oxford United in the EFL Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday evening to move into the semifinals of the competition.
Nigerian striker, Jonathan Obika failed to add to his tally of seven goals in all competitions for United as Chelsea ran roughshod through goals from Harvey St. Clair, Juan Familio-Castillo and Daishwan Redan.
St Clair kick started the onslaught in the 10th minute when he pounced on a rebound to turn home after Redan's initial effort was kept out by Oxford goalkeeper, Simon Eastwood.
Redan would join in on the goalscoring act six minutes later when he picked up a Hudson-Odoi's pass to hammer into the roof of the net to have Chelsea cruising.
And Castillo would then steer a lovely effort home deep into the second period to round off the scoring and ensure Joe Edwards side are one win away from Wembley.
Obika made way for Agon Mehmeti thirteen minutes from time while Chelsea's 18-year old midfielder, Tariq Uwakwe was not selected for the game.
With their passage, either of Shrewsbury, Lincoln City, Yeovil or Fleetwood Town await in the next rounds.
