Shocker: Argentina Star Ruled Out Of World Cup After Colliding With Iceland International
Published: March 12, 2018
FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Argentina international Emanuel Mammana has emerged as a doubt to suit up for the South Americans when they tackle the Super Eagles at the 2018 World Cup.
The defender had to be stretchered off the Stadion Olimp 2 (Rostov-na-Donu) pitch in the fifth minute of Zenit's Russian Premier League match at Rostov after he landed awkwardly on his knee following a collision with Iceland international Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson.
Diario Jornada is reporting that the Mammana left the stadium with a splint and on crutches to a hospital in which later it was determined that he suffered the rupture of the cruciate ligaments and the meniscus.
The 22-year-old was not invited for Argentina's upcoming friendlies against Spain and Italy and his chances of making the 23-man roster for the World Cup appear slim with this latest setback.
He was on the bench in La Albiceleste's 4-2 loss to Nigeria in a pre-World Cup friendly last November.
Meanwhile, Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero is doubtful for the national team's friendlies in March after suffering a discomfort in the left knee in training on Saturday, prior to the Citizens trip to Stoke City in the Premier League.
In 37 outings in all competitions this term, Aguero has scored 30 goals and is the third leading scorer in the English top-flight.
