World Cup Greatest Goal : Daniel Amokachi Knocked Out But Is Africa's Best
Published: April 07, 2018
Daniel Amokachi's wonder goal against Greece did not make it to the next
round in the voting for the favorite ever goal scored in a World Cup
tournament.
The former Everton striker would have faced Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the last sixteen but was knocked out by ex-England ace Michael Owen's sublime solo effort against Argentina in France 1998.
Of the 32 goals initially shortlisted for the accolade, Amokachi was the only player nominated from Africa.
Only eight strikes from van Bronckhorst, Ronaldinho, éder Aleixo de Assis, Edmílson, Manuel Negrete, Dennis Bergkamp, James Rodríguez and Teófilo Cubillas are still in the running for the FIFA World Cup greatest goal.
Five of the eight players played for South American countries at the World Cup, van Bronckhorst and Bergkamp are flying Europe's flag and Negrete CONCACAF.
The players that qualified for the semifinals will be announced today, April 7th while the two finalists will be revealed on Sunday.
Amokachi represented Nigeria at two World Cups, USA 1994 and France 1998, racking up five appearances in both competitions and scoring two goals against Bulgaria and Greece.
Along with Emmanuel Amunike, Kalu Uche and Ahmed Musa, he is Nigeria's top scorer in the World Cup.
