Promotion Candidates Portsmouth Eager To Sign Rotherham United Central Defender
Published: November 08, 2018
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that EFL League One Portsmouth are keen to bolster their defense in the January transfer window and to that end, they have beamed their searchlight on former Liverpool starlet Michael Ihiekwe.
Portsmouth have opened talks with representatives of the Rotherham United central defender over a move to Fratton Park and are confident that the deal will go through.
At the tail end of last season, Ihiekwe was preferred ahead of Semi Ajayi in central defense but the tables have turned this term as he is now behind the Nigeria international in the pecking order of defenders at The Millers.
For that reason, Ihiekwe was loaned out to Accrington Stanley until January 2019 and has established himself as a first team regular, starting all but one of their matches in the third-tier since completing his move.
The 25-year-old is in the final seven months of his contract with Rotherham United, whom he joined from Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 2017.
Portsmouth lead the standings in League 1 with 38 points on the board after seventeen games.
