'Saka Is Still At Left-back' - Arsenal Legend Concerned About Lack Of Transfer Incomings
Published: January 21, 2020
Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas is concerned that the Gunners have been inactive in the January transfer window despite the fact that some of their defenders are in the treatment room.
With the injury enforced absence of Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney, teenage winger Bukayo Saka has been used as a left-back by Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta in several games since December.
There are question marks over the availability of Greek center back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, first choice right back Héctor Bellerín has not played for close to seven weeks while Calum Chambers is out for the season after damaging the ACL in his left knee.
The north London club have been linked with a move for PSG left-back Layvin Kurzawa but the proposed deal is unlikely to go through in the January transfer window.
"It is needs must at the moment. No centre-backs have been brought in yet, while Bukayo Saka is still at left-back. We are still waiting on transfers,'' Nicholas said on Sky Sports.
"Mikel Arteta has to get in the market and help the defence. They are not letting as many in but Arsenal do not have a clinical side yet."
It is interesting to note that Saka has now been deployed at left-back in six of the fourteen matches he has played in the Premier League since his debut and he is favoured to continue in that role in tonight's big clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
