Chelsea Icon Mikel Dazzles For Stoke City In League Cup Win Against Aston Villa
Published: October 01, 2020
Chelsea icon John Obi Mikel helped Championship club Stoke City advance to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Premier League side Aston Villa at Villa Park on Thursday night, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Making his first appearance in the League Cup since October 27, 2015, the former Nigeria international put in another solid 90-minute shift as he has done in his previous three league games for the Potters.
Mikel was one of three Stoke City players retained in the starting lineup and was part of a five-man midfield also containing Brown, Tymon, Thompson and Powell.
Sam Vokes broke the deadlock with a header from the right of the six yard box following a corner in the 26th minute and it proved to be the winning goal.
From the start of the game, Mikel looked composed, assured and was able to get out of tight situations with his inventiveness.
Stoke City beat Blackpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Gillingham and Aston Villa without conceding a goal to reach the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.
