What Werder Bremen coach and Boniface said after striker's first Bundesliga start in 202 days
Published: October 26, 2025
Werder Bremen manager Horst Steffen has praised Nigerian striker Victor Boniface following his impressive display in the team's 1-0 win over Union Berlin on Friday.
Boniface made his first Bundesliga start in 202 days, marking a significant step in his return to full fitness.
The 24-year-old featured from the start before being substituted in the 85th minute, helping Bremen secure a crucial home victory.
The match was Boniface's first league start since April 5, 2024, when he lined up for Bayer Leverkusen in their 1-0 win over Hoffenheim.
Speaking after the game, Steffen commended the striker’s performance and influence on the pitch.
"I'm very happy that he was able to help us win the game," Steffen said to Werder Bremen's official website.
"He showed how good he can be. It's great that he lasted so long and performed well."
Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window, also expressed his delight at returning to the starting lineup.
"I felt good; it was the first time I've started a game in a long time,” Boniface said.
"The fans created a great atmosphere, and the most important thing is that we won the game."
The Nigerian international had an outstanding debut season at Leverkusen but has since struggled with injuries that limited his appearances.
He also faced criticism over his fitness since the start of the campaign following a failed move to AC Milan.
With his first start now behind him, Boniface will be eager to build on his performance and reestablish himself as one of the Bundesliga’s top forwards in the coming weeks.
