Crotone's Simy continues to push for Eagles recall with 8th Serie A goal, Nantes' Simon on target
Published: March 03, 2021
Crotone striker Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo continues to push for a recall to the Super Eagles on the back of his outstanding performances for his Italian Serie A club.
The lanky striker has been in the international wilderness for more than two years now, with his last game in Nigeria colours coming at the 2018 World Cup when he replaced Ahmed Musa in the closing minutes against Argentina.
Simy found the net as Crotone were hammered 5-1 by Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium (Bergamo) on Wednesday night.
In the 23rd minute, the former Gil Vicente goal poacher momentarily equalised with a delicate looped ball over the goalkeeper following a defensive error and in doing so took his tally in the Italian top-flight to 8 goals in 25 matches, not a bad return considering that Crotone are the bottom team in the division.
No Nigerian player has scored more goals than Simy in the top five European Leagues so far in 2020-2021.
Elsewhere, Super Eagles winger Moses Simon netted his fourth goal of the season as Nantes suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Reims in a French Ligue 1 match at the Stade de la Beaujoire - Louis Fonteneau.
In the 14th minute, Simon headed in at far post after an excellent delivery from Pedro Chirivella but goals from Konan and Yunis Abdelhamid saw the Canaries lose for the 12th time this season.
In terms of the league table, Nantes are second from bottom with 24 points from 28 matches.
