Ex-Bayern Munich defender Rohr reveals what Muller will bring to the German squad at Euro 2020
Published: June 15, 2021Former Bayern Munich defender Gernot Rohr has identified the qualities Thomas Müller will bring to the Germany squad, starting from this evening when they face France at the Allianz Arena.
Germany manager Joachim Low had to bring Muller back into the national team ahead of the 2020 European Championship following painful defeats to Spain in a friendly and North Macedonia in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.
Prior to the pre-Euro 2020 friendlies with Denmark and Latvia, the versatile Bayern Munich striker had not represented Die Mannschaft since November 2018.
Rohr revealed that Muller's experience and leadership qualities will come in handy for Germany at the European Championship.
The 31-year-old was a key player for the Bayern Munich team that won the the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League in 2019-2020.
"The results were not very good, and there was a need for a leader in this team, " Rohr said to Ouest France (subscription required).
"Müller will also bring his experience, his versatility, and his fighting character, his understanding with Bayern players, which will allow him to make a connection in the dressing room. He is a very appreciated player.
"Against North Macedonia, this lack of efficiency was obvious. It must have sparked reflection in Joachim Löw."
Muller, who has scored 39 goals in 103 appearances for Germany, has been named in the starting lineup against world champions France.
