Middlesbrough boss reacts to speculation linking Hale End product Akpom with Besiktas
Published: July 24, 2021
Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has played down speculation linking Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom with a summer move to Turkish giants Besiktas.
Allnigeriasoccer.com reported earlier this week that the Super Lig side have turned their attention to the former England youth international
following the injury sustained by one of the strikers on their wanted
list, Luuk de Jong, while ex-Chelsea star Diego Costa's wage demands are
proving to be a stumbling block to a proposed move.
Warnock claims he is unaware of reports suggesting that Besiktas are interested in bringing Akpom to Istanbul.
When asked to confirm reports that Akpom could be joining The Black Eagles, Warnock said to Teesside Live : "That’s news to me".
Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Akpom is competing for spot in the Middlesbrough starting lineup with new signing and Super Eagles hopeful Uche Ikpeazu ahead of the new season.
The 25-year-old is in the second year of his contract with Boro, whom he joined from Greek club PAOK in September 2020.
He directly participated in seven goals in 39 appearances for Middlesbrough in 2020-2021.
