Chelsea midfielder Anjorin's shirt number for 2021-2022 season revealed
Published: August 08, 2021
The official website of UEFA has revealed the squad numbers the Chelsea players will be wearing in their first competitive match of the 2021-2022 season - the Super Cup clash against Villarreal this coming Wednesday.
As previously hinted by allnigeriasoccer.com, Faustino Anjorin is set to switch his shirt number, and the governing body of football in Europe has confirmed as much.
The Anglo-Nigerian midfielder has been allocated the number 27, which he wore during Chelsea's last pre-season fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.
Previously, Anjorin played with the number 55 on the back of his jersey when on first team duties in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons.
With Villarreal's Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze all but ruled out of the Super Cup due to fitness issues, the England youth international is the only player of Nigerian descent with a realistic chance of being involved in some capacity at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast on August 11.
Anjorin will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of legendary Super Eagles left-back Celestine Babayaro, who helped Chelsea win their only Super Cup title in 1998.
His last competitive appearance for the European champions was against Barnsley in the fifth round of the Emirates Cup on February 11, 2021.
