UYL : Manchester United squad captained by Shoretire suffer heavy home defeat to Villarreal
Published: September 29, 2021Manchester United suffered a heavy home defeat to Villarreal in their second group match of the UEFA Youth League at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Devils have registered four players of Nigerian descent for the UEFA Youth League namely Shola Shoretire, Dillon Hoogewerf, Habeeb Ogunneye and Max Oyedele, but only two tasted action against the Spanish opponents.
After his exploits last season, United's Young Player of the Year Shoretire captained the U19s against Villarreal and he was joined in the starting line-up by Hoogewerf.
Joan Torrents gave the visitors an early lead in the fifth minute, tapping in the rebound after Medina hit the post.
Villarreal were leading by three goals inside thirty minutes with Jorge Pascual and Marlone Henry getting on the scoresheet, before Rodrigo Alonso made it 4-0 to put the Spanish side in complete control.
Shoretire, who went the distance, picked up a yellow card for a foul on 26 minutes and Hoogewerf was substituted just before the hour mark.
Alvaro Fernández, with a header, managed to pull a goal back for Manchester United with eighteen minutes left on the clock.
After two rounds in Group F, Manchester United are third with three points. They host Atalanta in their next UEFA Youth League game after the international break on October 20.
