'He's like a big brother to me' - Ajax striker Akpom shares advice he got from his Nigerian agent
Published: April 29, 2024
Ajax Amsterdam striker Chuba Akpom has revealed the important role his Nigerian agent has played in shaping his career.
The Arsenal Academy product is looked after by Elite Project Group's Emeka Obasi, who also handles the affairs of Super Eagles stars Terem Moffi, Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, Josh Maja and Joe Aribo.
Elite Project Group's other clients of Nigerian descent include prolific Arsenal U18 forward Chido Obi-Martin, Crystal Palace winger Malcom Ebiowei, Luton Town star Fred Onyedinma and 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup winner Sheji Ojo.
Obasi brokered the deals that took Akpom to PAOK, Middlesbrough and Ajax Amsterdam.
Akpom emphasized that his London-based Nigerian intermediary holds a pivotal role in his career, akin to that of his parents.
The Ajax Amsterdam number 10 further noted that he has gained a valuable lesson from his agent.
"Try to only have control over the controllable," Akpom said to Ajax Life, via Ajax Showtime.
"Sometimes you get frustrated or stressed about something you can't do or change, that just takes energy.
"It's more of a life lesson that applies to everyone. My agent, Emeka Obasi, gave me that advice. He's like a big brother to me."
Akpom joined four-time European champions Ajax last summer, signing a five-year deal that keeps him at the Johan Cruijff ArenA until June 2028.
The 28-year-old has mustered 14 goals in 33 all-competition appearances since joining the Dutch powerhouse despite limited playing opportunities.
