Manchester United star acknowledges Iheanacho deserved to win EPL POTM ahead of himself
Published: October 14, 2021
Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard has acknowledged that Kelechi Iheanacho deserved to win the Premier League Player of the Month award for March 2021 ahead of himself.
After a brilliant start to his career at West Ham United, Lingard was in the frame for the monthly accolade along with Iheanacho, Christensen, Kane, Lingard, Mahrez, Meslier, Shaw and Trossard.
The England international was nominated for the prize after getting on the scoresheet twice and providing an assist, while Iheanacho tallied five goals, helping Leicester City collect seven points from a possible nine in the top-flight.
Iheanacho became the fourth Nigerian player to win the Premier League Player of the Month award after Jay-Jay Okocha, Peter Odemwingie and Odion Ighalo.
"I felt really close in March, but Kelechi Iheanacho bagged a hat trick and snuck it … probably deserved it, to be fair," Lingard told the Players Tribune.
"By April, I had forgotten about it (honestly). Then the media guy at West Ham sent me a voice note, and he's like, "You've won Player … and Goal of the Month."

The following month, April, Lingard beat Iheanacho and six other contenders namely Trent Alexander-Arnold, Stuart Dallas, Mason Greenwood, Matheus Pereira, Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood to win the Player of the Month.
