Iwobi reaches milestone as West Ham end Everton's 100% home record under Benitez
Published: October 17, 2021
Alex Iwobi reached a milestone as Everton lost their one hundred percent record at home under manager Rafa Benitez after they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham United at Goodison Park.
The Arsenal academy product, who pulled out of the Nigeria squad for the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches against Central African Republic due to an undisclosed ailment, recovered in time to make his fiftieth start in an Everton shirt.
Signed from Arsenal in the summer of 2019, Iwobi registered 40 starts for the Toffees in the Premier League, and was named in the starting lineup for Carabao Cup and FA Cup matches eight and two times respectively.
It was goalless at half-time but Iwobi had the best chance for Everton to break the deadlock but wasn't able to connect to Gray's shot from six yards out.
Four minutes into the second half, the Super Eagle came close again to opening the scoring when he controlled the ball but saw his effort hit a West Ham defender and spin wide.
With sixteen minutes remaining, Angelo Ogbonna timed his jump perfectly and headed past Pickford for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Iwobi departed the field in the 79th minute and the young winger Anthony Gordon came on to replace him.
