Manchester United defender of Nigerian descent becomes provisionally cap-tied to England
Published: October 19, 2021Promising Manchester United defender of Nigerian descent Habeeb Ogunneye is now provisionally cap-tied to England, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Ogunneye started for the Young Lions in their opening match of the UEFA Under-17 European Championship qualifiers on October 16, lasting 61 minutes on the National Olympic Stadium turf in Minsk before making way for Liverpool's Josh Davidson.
Sporting the number 17 on the back of his jersey, the Anglo-Nigerian helped England U17s register an emphatic 7-0 win over Armenia, with Joshua Feeney, Emre Tezgel, Kane Taylor, Amario Cozier Duberr, Jamie Donley and Kobbie Mainoo getting on the scoresheet.
Though Ogunneye has attended England youth teams training camp in the past, the match against Armenia was his first competitive appearance for the Young Lions.
He has to submit an application to FIFA for a one-time change of association should he decide to represent Nigeria in future, provided he does not play a competitive match for the Three Lions.
Ogunneye was a non-playing substitute in England's 1-0 win over Belarus on Tuesday afternoon.
A schoolboy at Manchester United, the 15-year-old has already made three appearances in the U18 Premier League so far this season.
